Mature plant
has both floating and submerged leaves
submersed leaves are alternate; upper leaves may be opposite
stems are simple or slightly branched
flowers are in elongate heads or spikes held above the water surface
reproduces by seeds, tubers, or winter buds on the tips of rhizomes, usually beneath the soil surface
Management
Plow the field to a depth of 8 to 12 inches and follow by a rotation to a nonirrigated crop
Apply herbicide before development of winter buds
