| The California Rice Commission (CRC) has been approved in a recent vote by growers and handlers. Of the 2625 rice growers eligible to vote, CDFA received 1200 valid ballots, a 45.7% response (40% was required), 94.2% voted in favor of the commission. Thirteen of the eligible 17 handlers responded (or 76.5%), of which 12 supported the commission. The new commission will oversee public relations, promotion, education, outreach, and governmental affairs, functions formerly managed by the California Rice Promotion Board and California Rice Industry Association. CDFA is conducting a second vote to elect the Commission's board of directors which will consist of 17 producers and 17 handlers. The CRC marketing order is unusual in that it is led by both growers and handlers, each paying half the costs of running the commission. |
